Be safe, be smart, be informed: Know, before you go to the show.

Don't waste your time and money! Before you see a movie, make sure it is worth seeing. How? Rank it against the >>Internet Movie Database's catalog of movies.

With the Decoder Ring, it's easy. Find the column that most closely matches your movie's rating on IMDB. When that column intersects the "All genres" row, the number you find is the movie's percentile score: the percentage of movies that your movie is better than, loosely speaking. If the movie is a genre film, say an action movie, also see how it compares with other movies in the genre by finding the corresponding entry in the genre's row.

For example, at the time I wrote this snippet, >>Fantastic Four (2005) had a user rating of 6.0 on IMDB. Looking down the 6.00 column, we find 46 in the "All genres" row. So, the movie is better than about 46 percent of movies in the database, which isn't impressive. FF is an action film, however, and from the Action row we see that it ranks higher than 61 percent – more than half – of films in the genre. If we're in the mood for an action flick, then, FF would probably be a tolerable choice.

Now let's look up a particularly good film: >>The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. On IMDB it has a rating of 9.0, which on the decoder ring corresponds to an All-genres score of 99 percent – better than virtually all other movies. Indeed, the film currently holds a top spot in the "IMDB Top 250" list.

Now that you know how the decoder ring works, here it is. Print or bookmark it now. Don't face your next movie-viewing decision without it!
